Blog Update

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen I chose the name ‘missbudgetbeauty’ there was little thought that went in to it. At the time I was out of work and so my budget was limited and honestly I don’t even know where it came from but it sounded catchy and relevant to my situation. Had I known that 5 years later a large number of people would know me by that name I may have thought a little harder about it. It’s a bit of a catch 22 really as I still love it and I know that putting myself in that niche sector is why I gained the following that I did however as time has passed and my lifestyle (and budget) have changed I’ve felt a little trapped by it. Here on my blog nobody really seems to mind what I talk about, it’s rare for a reader to complain about the price of an item however on YouTube it’s still very much a ‘thing’ if I mention any product that costs more than £10. Around 18 months ago after considering re-branding my channel I decided that if I was going to call myself missbudgetbeauty then I ought to live up to it. I set up a second channel (which if you missed the post recently hit 20k subscribers) so I now try wherever possible to keep anything none budget/beauty related over there and it’s working quite nicely.

I’ve been considering doing something similar with my blog ever since but starting over is a daunting thought. Building a readership (in my experience) is a slower process than building an audience on YouTube and so it’s tough to think of being back to square one but there are posts I’m not even writing because I don’t think they’re relevant here. So I’ve decided on a trial separation. For those of you who don’t know I have a collab channel with my friend Emma which we both really enjoy but we also have a blog which has been neglected. I’m going to pick it up and use it for anything I want to talk about on the higher end of the price scale, whether it be shoes, handbags, expensive makeup.. you get me. I’m not ruling out ALL non budget friendly posts here, if there’s something AWESOME that I think you should know about or a recipe I want to share I still might post it and I will still put up the odd lifestyle piece as I think it brings some balance but I will be posting a lot more over there so I would love for you to follow that blog if you think you’ll be interested in that content. I’d also love to here your opinions about separating things. I think my long time readers are cool with whatever it is I want to talk about but I understand that my name brings certain expectations and if you’re new you might be confused by my content which has evolved since I started writing here.

I’m hoping this will be a success and be a permanent thing but for now we’ll have to wait and see! You can follow here or check out or YouTube channel here. See you over there soon!

Miss BB

I understand where your coming from I’ve followed both your blog n YouTube for a good few years through the splitting channels , I think using styleontoast for that is a great idea you shouldn’t be restricted by a name as to what you post

I agree, when you first start blogging you just go with something and over time it may not work anymore. I changed mine to the basic “Emmys Blog” as i wanted something simply that wouldn’t restrict me x

in part I wish I could do that but I do love my blog name so I wouldn’t want to give it up altogether

I understand where you are coming from but I honestly don’t mind. It’s not usually the price of something that a tracts me but the actual item and me being nosey lol I love seeing what other people spend their money or time on.
I already follow the collaboration blog so look forward to seeing some post there. ☺

I hadn’t even noticed your name didn’t fit! I get why you wish to changed it but the same time if I like a bloggers content I want it all in the same place and not have to follow two blogs to get it all. With blog lovin it doesn’t matter too much but when I’m just on the blog and not blog lovin it becomes a pain. However since I enjoy your posts I will follow the new one.

I never mind if a blog or channel doesn’t always stick to its original premise or does vary the content. I just read/watch what interests me and skip over the posts/visors that don’t.

For a long time I resented that people complained if I didn’t stick to budget only but I have come to realise that without that niche I may not have gained as many readers/viewers so it would be unfair of me to change the goal posts now. I have more than enough content to blog purely about budget beauty and lifestyle stuff here and just keep the not so relevant things and maybe even style posts over there

The thing is, you’re one of the rarest and most interesting Youtubers out there. You have stayed true to yourself and I’ve seen you grow with your blog and channel. I was on a tight budget last year but since returning back to work, it’s increasing. It’s your blog, it’s your decision what you put out there. IF people don’t like it, then they can kindly click away from your page. The issue I have is that most people looking for budget videos, actually end up being sold something much more expensive. One huge Youtuber started out with Primark bags and now uses a Mulberry and such alike as their whats in my handbag. And the audience grows with it.

I’ve always thought it depends how you define budget, if you’re house buying you can have a house budget of £80k or a budget of £500k, but your budget comes down to what you can afford, I then compare that with beauty products to if a product which is a higher “budget” is worth the extra expense, and that’s the way I’ve always thought of it, you’ll still always have a budget, whether it’s more or less than other people’s – there aren’t many people who can live by the opinion that money is no object!

I watch both of your channels and really enjoy the mix but have no interest in style on toast tbh so wouldn’t be interested in going over to that blog to read anything as I read and watch your you tube videos for you (if that makes sense!) Keep up the good work though xxx

The comment from ‘Rachel’ above is exactly right. Budget means different things to different people. People kicking off on youtube seems ridiculous to me!
Since following the blog and the channel my budget has changed too and now when you post more ‘expensive’ items I think there is a reason and it could be worth the money since we already know you are happy using cheaper products.

LOL! I have been using that argument for around 4 of the 5 years I’ve been blogging.. I will always let you know if there’s something expensive that’s REALLY worth your cash but I respect that not everyone is as open minded and I have built what I have on one thing, it would be unfair to just ignore that

I understand that you feel your name restricts what you can blog about but the word ‘budget’ means different things to different people. I know several friends that only buy beauty stuff from the pound shop and think The Body Shop is expensive. Maybe you could do more features like ‘skincare on a budget’ or ‘how to get big hair without breaking the bank’ then you are free to do other posts as well. Just an idea either way I’ll keep reading.

I agree budget doesn’t mean cheap but that’s what people associate it with.. skincare on a budget for example is open to interpretation but you’d expect it to mean low cost/affordable. I’m happy to seperate things and am blogging there with my friend so it’s nice to do something together

I was actually wondering about when you would do this because as an avid watcher of videos from both your channels I could see you felt a bit tugged in both directions and almost restrained because of your name which is a shame. But I totally understand that you don’t want to almost ‘betray’ your brand image and what it is about but also I think people do understand that times have changed where no blogging is much bigger than one first might have apprehended and of course as people get older you change from buying that £9 foundation to wanting to try £40 foundations.
    Hope all goes well!
