Garnier BB Cream Oil Free – Comparison

It feels like an absolute age since I reviewed the first Garnier BB cream when in fact it was only a year ago. Seems fitting that a year later I review their newest addition to the BB family, the oil free skin perfector. When I was pregnant and for some months afterwards my skin was much drier than I’d been used to but as times gone on I think I’m getting oilier again and the BB cream I loved is no longer working for me. It leaves me super shiny and doesn’t last 5 minutes so when I saw the combination-oily skin formula I knew I had to try it. I’ve been putting it off as I have some foundations on the go I just love but given that I am soon returning to work and wont be able to go makeup free as often I thought a return to my beloved BB cream was in order and I’m very happy to report that this new version has is everything I hoped for and more.

You can read my original review of the first Garnier BB cream here.. and watch my first thoughts video here.

First of all the original and oil free are totally different products.. or so it would seem. The original (below right) is thick and a lot like a tinted moisturiser, the new formula (below left) is more like a liquid foundation in it’s consistency and it’s coverage is higher too, I’d say light to medium where the original was very light. I was also pleased to find that the oil free BB cream was buildable, set pretty quickly to a satin finish and get this.. lasts ALL DAY! I wanted to give it a real test rather than wearing it around the house so yesterday in very humid weather I walked to work for a visit and went food shopping.. all in all I must have walked more than 2 miles round trip. My face was shiny after only half an hour.. as I’d expect so I thought by the time I got home I’d be makeup-less, I forgot all about it until the evening when I went to wash my face and low and behold my base was perfectly intact! I loved the original BB cream and that only lasted til lunch so if this had done the same but worked for my now oilier skin I’d have been happy but this is a TOTALLY different animal! If you hated the first version I encourage you to get a sample of this because it’s a very impressive product.

Another rather significant difference is the shades of these too ‘light’ creams.. they should be the same in theory but the new oil free one is considerably lighter which again for me is a plus because the original was always a little too dark. So you paler girls again. give the new version a whirl! I have considered that in the colder weather when I feel I need more moisture I could mix the two together and create some kind of hybrid but I’ll let you know how that goes as and when I try it. When I ‘hauled’ this on YouTube someone commented to say they hadn’t liked the new formulation because it clung to dry patches and wasn’t at all moisturising, it’s important to note that the oil free BB cream is nothing like a tinted moisturiser so although I prefer it if that’s what you’re looking for I’d still recommend the original. It’s worth mentioning thought that it didn’t dry my skin out in the least.

You can see the official differences above, the only thing that stands out to me is the improved sun protection – I haven’t checked the photo flash back yet so again. will update when I’ve had it for a while I just really wanted to tell you my first impressions. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t try this as soon as it launched because it’s totally blown my healthy mix serum out of the water for longevity which I’d have bet a lot against. I think I’m so impressed because I was expecting so little but really truly.. I love this stuff!

Currently on offer for £7.49 in Boots here (but I’d be happy to pay the RRP £9.99)

Have you tried this yet?

Hi, you should give the new Body Shop BB cream try. i loved it and for me personally its the best one of all. it last a long time and keeps the skin moistured all day. i personally don’t wear foundation cos i don’t need a lot of coverage so i prefer BB creams. I think you should give it a try specially since you have oily to combination skin.

I’m so picky with foundation and it’s so expensive to try new things once I’ve found something I love I don’t often branch out but I’ll swatch it in store x

Ya you should cos even i don’t like spending a lot of money on very expensive foundations

That is a very good review. I agree with you on all points:-) I’ve mixed the 2 together today and so far so good! I’m hoping by mixing i get the moisture but with the addition of the coverage and lasting power. I’m looking forward to seeing what you think about that in the future when you try it out:-) x

I definitely think it’s a better colour match for you! I’ll have a look for this after I’ve gone through my foundations… but since I have a lot of face & body left it’s going to be a while!

This looks lovely on your skin, the original BB cream is a tad dark for me (even in light) so i might have to get this and give it a go! Thanks for the comparasion, really useful

thank you! Yeah I stopped wearing the original when I realised it was a little too dark so I’m pleased this is lighter

I so want to try this now, i have oily skin and loved the original garnier bb cream but it left me a bit too shiney, i’ve tried both l’oreal ones and the maybelliene one but they haven’t come close to the garnier one, i was tempted to try clinique’s new one but its been reported that its quite thick and not as nice as their usual products, think i may give this one a go now xx

this is definitely worth trying especially while it’s on offer in boots.. I so wish I’d tried it earlier as the bb creams seem to be so much nicer for my skin x

    • Annette

You get 40ml in this one instead of 50ml.

Went out and got the new formula, I love it, the original was just too greasy. the only downer about it for me is the colour, I had to warm it up with some bronzer, but I love the coverage. Thanks for the review.

the original was a touch dark for me but if both oil free’s are darker you may be better with the medium shade x

I was SO close to buying this the other day but went with the Maybelline version instead, because at the time Ingrid from Miss Glamorazi was raving about it and I have super oily skin (as does she ofcourse) but I love the natural look of Tm’s and BB creams. I love the maybelline one but i’m intrigued to try this one next when I use my Maybelline one up!

I love your youtube vids btw!

lots of ppl have recommended the maybelline to me but I am so happy with this one now I don’t need anything better so it would just be a waste of money x

I am defiantly going to be buying the new bb cream, great review! I really like how you take the time to always add new posts. Also I love your yotube vidoes! xx

thank you!! it’s got tougher since going back to work but I try and squeeze it in when I can.. Lee’s in the shower right now for example so I an grab 20 mins to respond to comments without feeling guilty hehe
oh and just a note.. I’ve since stopped using the bb cream because the alcohol content (I believe) broke me out.. And I don’t break out easily so maybe get a tester first or something x

i got the garnier bb cream today, was a lil worried since i got the original formula and the online reviews on it were not v gud, BUT BUT BUT it actually turned out gr8 for me! 🙂 im loving it! it has gud coverage, v hydrating for my dry winter skin and gives a nice dewy finish.. so im glad i got it because foundations never worked 4 me, ive tried so many brands but none worked.. i could never blend the product and ended up looking dull, dry and cakey. but this is gr8! im hoping to find the newer version (in light/medium) which i feel would be ever better :D..yippeeee!!!

i have combination skin with an oily t-zone and drier cheeks/forehead. the original was beautiful, lasted me all day, and I didn’t have to blot my face at all! the oil free version left me having to blot numerous times and i feel like it was what was causing small hive like bumps on my face! 🙁 i will stick with the original

the issue is the high alcohol content, it can have the opposite effect than you’d like and can cause you skin to produce more oil than normal and even breakout. I had that issue at first but now it seems fine

I have tried this and like the colour match to my skin and the coverage but somehow my bottle(?) is broken, so the product comes out and sits in the lid! 🙁

  17. 23 May, 2013 / 5:02 am

I love how natural they look on you! If I just looked at the after pics, I would’ve thought you weren’t wearing any makeup at all. I have the all-in-one bb cream and absolutely love it for its flawless finish 🙂

Have you tried Holika Holika’s Clearing Petit BB cream? It’s great for oily skin and cheaper, £3.9 on ebay (ships worldwide). It’s definitely worth trying. Highly recommend.

I have just found the sensitive version of the original Garnier BB cream. It’s similar in consistency but the light shade is much lighter and has SPF 25. Might be helpful to those that are too fair for the original like me. x

I’ve used the original one in “light” for over a year now, and I really loved it except for the fact that indeed in summer my skin is waaay too oily for it. So today I bought the one for the oily skin, also in light. Whereas the original cream was perfect for my skin tone, this one is slightly too light for me. Do you think I should get the medium tone or will it be too dark for me? 🙂

Great comments. I only just realised that the packaging is different and therefore new! I really don’t like the new one as my face is shining after an hour. The old one is much better and was a better texture for me. Can you still buy the original and if so where? Bought the new one at tesco for only 4.99 so won’t be disappointed if I don’t use it anymore.
