Hair Damage Diary #1

Screen Shot 2015-08-30 at 21.15.36I don’t usually post videos here unless they complement a post bit today it’s just a shameless plug and a heads up that many of the products mentioned are heavily discounted right now. I’ve experience some serious hair breakage and hair loss recently and although I’m not 100% of the cause right now I thought it might be useful long term to share my story/journey (gosh, that sounds dramatic, doesn’t it?) so that someone might find this in the future and follow it along to a resolution.. worst case I am going to have A LOT of fun with wigs!

Here’s the video…

And here are the products I’ve been/I’m going to be trialling..
Redken Extreme Shampoo
Redken Strength Builder Plus
Redken Anti-Snap
PureologyPerfect For Platinum Shampoo/Conditioner
Pureology Colour Fanatic Treatment Spray
Joico K-Pack Deep Penetrating Reconstructor
Fountain Hair Molecule Supplement
Grow Gorgeous Growth Serum
LUSH Roots Hair Mask
Nanogen Thickening Treatment Shampoo/Conditioner

Is this something you’ve suffered from? I experienced something similar after both of my pregnancies which is why I suspect this might be more hormonal than bleach related but you just never know so I’d love to hear from you if you’ve ever had anything similar happen to you! How did you deal with it?

The osmo deep repair hair mask is amazing and really cheap. Also try coconut oil overnight and do not use any heat on your hair . I haven’t used any heat on my hair for over a month and I really feel the difference xx

I am really interested to watch this series on hair damage. I have suffered with thinning hair and breakage for years. My doctor thinks it may be related to my auto immune condition (sarcoidosis) but they aren’t sure. So far none of the thickening shampoos sold at the supermarket make any difference. It really gets me down. Thanks for doing these videos 🙂

I’m not sure if it’ll do anything for that amount of hair breakage but I’ve always had good luck with the OGX range – the anti-breakage keratin oil conditioner always seems to be really nourishing, and it’s not majorly expensive. It also makes it extremely easy to comb through afterwards. Perhaps worth a shot? Good luck with your hair journey!!

My hair changed when I went on Cerazette, I shed a bunch and the roots were much weaker so I had breakage too. When it first happened it tried almost every product under the sun to try and stop the breakage. The Redken Extreme mask and the TIGI S-Factor Serious conditioner are the only two that have stuck around since the major breakage incident. Its been about 2-3 years and I still alternate between those two masks and still bleach my hair. Fair warning the TIGI stuff has the texture of bodyshop body butter and smells like calpol and airwaves but it does the job and the tubs are huge. I also seal in my leave in with an oil while it’s damp and finger detangle when it’s dry. My hair is in really good condition for bleached hair now. Keep babying it until you can cut it off. Shed hairs have a bulb at the end broken ones don’t so have a look and see if they are mainly shed or broken. Good luck! 🙂

Have you looked into Olaplex at all?
    From their website FAQs:
It reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair. Hair bonds are broken during thermal, mechanical and chemical services.

The Bond Multiplying System can be used as a reset button for your client’s hair and by doing so allows you to rebuild the strength, structure and integrity to the point where a color or chemical service would then be feasible once again. This treatment may be done before and/or after a chemical service and may be applied in the salon once a week or more.

Even if you completely stop using Olaplex, the disulfide link that Olaplex offered is permanent.

I’m only 17 and I feel as though I have more than the average hair loss, I’ll perhaps give these products a go as the redken stuff is something I’ve been meaning to try out! x

I have had this happen to me twice now from having full head bleach highlights and hairdressers not being very careful ( overlapping the bleach etc ) . I know how awful it feels to go from having hair in pretty good condition to hair being stretchy when wet and coming out in clumps. I have always used good hair products and have tried most of the ones you are trying out but really theyre not strong enough. The thing that stopped my hair coming out was an in-salon treatment called Biolustre which used to be available at most Toni & Guy salons and the first time I had it it cost £120 but was seriously worth every penny. The second time I could only find one salon that did the treatment which is the Toni & Guy salon on Wardour Street in Soho London and it cost £70. I travelled all the way from Hull to London to get it done and again it totally kept my hair on my head after major damage which was last year and I was able to carry on getting my full head highlights every 3 months as usual. If you want more details you can message me but honestly I know how upsetting it can be. Forgot to say it is a permanent treatment and does not wash out.

Hi I left this comment on youTube as well but there are so many you may not see it so i have posted it here as well. I suffer from hair loss. If I brush it, it falls out from the roots. If I wash it, it falls from the roots. in clumps. Yes I do dye my hair alot but I don’t heat style. it got so bad I was getting stressed and panicking about it all the time. I had a blood test and all was clear. I am also not on any contraception as I am sterilised so hormones were not to blame. so I looked into it and I was deficient in folic acid and b12. I started a course of Methyl Folate and high dose b12 lozenges. after about two months it stopped my hair stopped falling out in large clumps and thickened up! then I stopped taking thrm and sure enough after a month my hair started to fall out again. I have been back on them now for a month and the hair loss is once again slowing up and my hair is getting back to good condition. I am happy if you want more details or information for you to contact me and I can go into further details. I hope this helped. it’s so so so stressful loosing hair and I really despaired but honestly this has done the job. I have before and after shots as well.

Hi, I was directed to your you tube vid after posting on a hair care forum about my broken bleach danaged hair! I have a very long story but I’ll try and be quick- I very thick hair and had been having half head foil highlights with no issues for years. My hair is dark red so takes ages to lift. Recently moved cities and ended up going to a different hairdresser. Basically I paid £125 at the ‘best salon in *****’ and ended up with the top part of my head bleached bright yellow (after I told him I like it ashy) and the remaining 7 inches of hair a mix of dark blonde and ginger. To top it all off, the first 5 inches were now totally ruined and snapping off. Cue an emergency visit 40 miles away to my old hairdresser for lowlights to try and even it out, and im left with a colour I don’t like (murky browny blonde) which is at least now more even , and a crown section all broken off due to the awful bleach job. I’ve tried olaplex 3 times now as a treatment but still can’t bake my mind up over it, I think I’m still just distressed over my hair. It’s falling out in clumps too, probably due to the trauma and dye. I’m lucky I have thick hair but that also means no heat styling = frizzy mushroom hair. I’m resigned to pinning it back with pins all the time now . I’m using coconut oil soaks overnight, kerastase therapiste range products, olaplex and taking biotin, omega 3, a multi vit and sometimes silica. I think your hair breakage is most liky due to bleach too and I just wanted to say you’re not alone! I’ve had a hair cut but didn’t dare go short , so just went to just below shoulders instead. I’m desperate for it to all grow out! I miss my blonde but I’m craving natural healthy Virgin hair now!

it’s so awful, isn’t it? I just had mine coloured and hate it.. totally affects how you feel about yourself! I’d suggest pencilling a date in your diary and not doing anything at all to t until then so you have a ‘goal’ to look forward to rather than waiting forever for it to grow out. Break it down in to smaller periods like ‘2 weeks til I can heat style’ etc.. that’s worked for me when I’ve had REALLY bad damage in the past

Eagerly awaiting your next hair update! Not blow drying my hair is a nightmare with my hair texture. I’m giving it until mid October until I get the heat styling tools out again! If I can hold on that long. Have you tried biotin? I’m currently taking it, nails are growing but no difference with hair yet! X

I’ve used macadamia healing oil treatment for quite a while now and I can really see the difference. My hair used to fall out due to all the flatning I’ve done over the past many years and my hair just kept getting shorter and shorter, then I started using the morrocanoil, didn’t do anything to my hair what so ever, then I bought the macadamia oil, first of all it is cheaper and second of all, I can really see a difference, like my hair is getting so long for the first time in many years. Already used up two bottles and I will defo continue buying the oil! xx

I’m going through very fast thinning hair at the moment, the hair that’s growing back is 80% grey. I was doing a root touch up every 2 weeks I’m now trying for every 3-4 weeks and using a bastise coloured dry shampoo to hide the grey. I think it’s due to my under active thyroid, my go hasn’t been very helpful. It’s a big issue for me, I no longer feel like me in photos. I’m so following this series. I’m interested to see what works for you xoxo
