Hairspiration – *Fearn Cotton* – Block Blonde vs Highlights

fearne cotton platinum block blonde

I have love Fearne Cottons hair ever since she hit the bottle and went this unnatural shade of platinum. Now I’m in the position where I’ve had enough highlights to go for a block blonde colour with little additional damage to my lengths and I’m finding myself on Fearnes instagram page more and more often.. I just love it. I have the option of adding lowlights for some depth and maintaining with 6-8weekly highlighting sessions or going for an overall blonde colour and I’m just not sure which way to go. I know the foils will give a more natural look but I’m kind of digging the super blonde I have going on right now and I feel like regular root touch ups will be less damaging to my hair down the road than less frequent foils.

My hair is in pretty good nick for the things I put it through and it’s still growing nicely (I’m aiming for the length Fearne has in the largest picture here) so I don’t want to over process the already blonde ends and risk them breaking and needing a significant chop. I’m definitely leaning towards the solid colour but would love to hear from those of you who have chosen that over highlights as I just don’t know how mad it could look. I don’t mind the obvious roots as I’d likely get them redone once a month anyway but I’m not sure how super blonde roots will look when my hair is up.. Gwen Stefani is a good example of this, her hair looks epic down but up it’s always a bit scary (in my opinion) and I’m just a bit to lazy to style mine every day.

This evening I shall be treating myself to an extra long toning session to brighten up my current colour in a bid to put off the salon appointment while I weigh up my options but in the meantime I thought I’d share my current celeb hair crush. – Also interested to hear your recommendations for brow products for super blonde hair.. I have my favourites but suggestions are always welcome!

I love her hair!! I think the block colour is gorgeous! Why not give it a go? You can always change it if you don’t like it on you. 😛

I’ve been dying my hair blonde for at least 5 last five years consistently at the hair dressers alternating between highlights and block colour (after switching from blonde to brown for many years) – the only real problem with block colour is the maintenance, the roots always look so much worse as they come up in one big stripe where as you can really push how long highlights last when life seems to get in the way of the appointment! I’ve been near the colour of Fernes for a long time now but usually get highlights now to give flexibility on depth and shade, also I only get the roots topped up in my foils rather than the whole lengths to try and save some damage!
also still recommended the 2tru eyebrow pencil in shade 2 – the lightest one I’ve found (and I’ve searched the whole of boots and most of debenhams) and seriously cheap!!

I’ve been super blonde for a while now and I love it, I used Bleach London’s total bleach on my already dyed blonde and highlighted hair and it worked so well! I actually find that with the super blonde hair, dark brows look best, like with Emily Weiss http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ca/48/54/ca4854af4e4bc02c2146d3d186bc69d8.jpg also the Bleach London silver shampoo is an absolute miracle product, as is the reincarnation mask, but DO NOT buy the boxed white toner, it turned my hair green! GO BLONDES!

That platinum hair does look seriously gorgeous, definitely making me want to go blonder! I think you should go for it, seeing as your hair is already quite light it shouldn’t damage the ends too much. And if you feel like a change later down the line it’s no big deal to put a semi permanent slightly darker blonde over or get some highlights. I think it would look amazing on you x

You should totally go for it! You look amazing with light blonde hair, and it’s different from the ombré everyone and their mother has right now.

Hello I came across this post today and would love to know what you decided to do as I am trying to figure out exactly the same thing. Go for an all over blonde colour or stay with highlights? I am really confused so any advice would be so appreciated. Thank you 🙂

I finally went for a block blonde at my last appointment and am going back for the same next week.. I really like it, much prefer the shorter root as highlights can give you really long roots after a while in certain areas but I did struggle with a yellow tone.. will do an update after my next appointment all about the process and how I take care of it etc. I think I prefer it so far but not sure whether it’s any more damaging yet.. my stylist says not

Thank you so much for your reply. The long roots is what I am really struggling with – I can’t stand them! But so many people are trying to talk me out of an all over colour because of the up keep. My roots are pretty dark. Basically the last few hairdressers have messed up my hair so I now have loads of regrowth even when I have just had it coloured! Can I ask how long you have gone between appointments? I completely understand what you are saying about the yellow as I am struggling with that as well, even with foils. Look forward to your next post to hear all about the process and how you take care of it. Thanks so much again.
