How Do You Feel About Sponsorship?

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 13.42.45

Sponsorship isn’t something I worry too much about on my blog, I review a lot of products, some sent to me some purchased and every so often I am paid to include a link in a post which I disclose at the end of it. It’s never seemed like a big deal because generally there is little to no negative feedback regarding clearly marked sponsored blog posts. On YouTube however this is a whole different matter. People feel almost betrayed by the bloggers they look to for help and advice if they know they have been paid to promote a product. On the one hand I can totally see where they are coming from but on the other if it’s a product that a blogger has already trialled and enjoys then what’s the harm? I wanted to get across my feelings regarding sponsorship as well as garner as many opinions as possible before I venture in to potentially accepting more sponsored content in my videos so yesterday I posted a message on my facebook page asking what you thought. I had a huge response and chatted with many of you until I felt like I had enough talking points for the video I wanted to make. I think part of the reason that people dislike sponsorship is that it seems so cloak and dagger.. you hear about it but you may not totally understand what it means to be sponsored so I wanted to answer as many questions and make the whole thing as clear as possible. Obviously I can’t speak for other bloggers but I had very set ideas about what I thought was fair.. after reading through the comments to the video I will be slightly amending some of those ideas to make things as transparent as honest as I can for my viewer.

My Policy

Moving forward any video sponsorship will be disclosed within the body of the video (as I recently discovered in law) whether that be at the beginning, the end, in text or my verbally explaining it it will be disclosed in some way as well as more info being available in the info bar! If I am still testing out a product I will make that clear so that you do not think I am endorsing it as a favourite but if I tell you I like something please believe I do. If I have been paid to mention something in the past and mention it again unless that follow up video is also marked as sponsored then it is not and I have no vested interest in you buying that product. I do briefly want to touch on affliate links. I have always disclaimed affiliation with skimlinks in every post since I joined the scheme but I have recently started adding these links to my videos as well. There will be a disclosure in the info bar of every video stating that links MAY be affiliate and that I may financially benefit from your following them and purchasing a product.

If this policy changes I will let you know. My blog sponsorship policy remains the same, I will add a sponsored disclosure within the post or the title to make it clear to my reader that one or several links within it have been paid for.

Lastly I have only made 2 sponsored videos so far this year and don’t intend to start churning them out now, I do worry that because I have brought this to the forefront of peoples minds that they will think I have been paid for many mentions when in fact I am really only just starting to be open to the idea of video sponsorship – I just wanted to be sure that I was doing it in the right way for my audience. I will be very selective and thus far the offers I’ve accepted have been giveaways so they were of benefit to my viewers as well as myself. That being said I may well promote a brands giveaway for free or review a product that has been sent to me – feel free to ask me if a video is sponsored, I will not be offended but it will always in disclosed.

Nothing wrong with it at all – I just dislike gushes of praise on product after product. Sponsorship is cool as long as the reviews are always honest IMO!

Funny you mentioned this because just this morning a blogger wrote a post about (not) using her 2010 favorites this year. One of the products she reviewed is a 200$ pot of LaMer cream and it was included in her yearly favs so you get the idea BUT today she said she doesn’t use it anymore because it was too rich for her young skin and gave her pimples. She also, just like everybody else states that she would never, ever endorse anything she didn’t really like.
Fortunately i am a grown woman and i never buy something blindly just because others say so but teenagers of today, with millions of fashion/beauty/homedecor/gadget blogs are doomed, no offense.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sponsorship as long as the review is honest, I would never be annoyed at anyone for featuring a sponsored product as long as they were honest.

I don’t see a problem in sponsored videos/posts or with affiliate links – as long as they’re your genuine thoughts I think that’s all that matters x

I have no problem with it as long as it is clearly stated. You don’t come across as a person who would rave on about how good a product is just because you got paid for it or they sent it to you. Make money if you can, just state it so you don’t get accused of lying. Personally, I really enjoy your reviews and find them very helpful because they are down to earth just like you – you are the girl next door, so I can relate to you (this is a compliment). So what if you got paid for it all the better for you 🙂

I completely agree with you, and to be honest, I don’t really understand why people wouldn’t! I trust your opinion 100%, whether it’s a sponsored video/post or not :)xo

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sponsorship or being sent products – I know a lot of the YouTubers with massive amounts of subscribers often don’t disclaim where they’ve been sent them or if a video is sponsored which I don’t much like if I’m honest. But with full disclosure, there should be no issues 🙂 xx

I think sponsorship is ok as long as you’re honest about it and give honest opinions which we know you will. Just don’t turn into Elle and Blair making a whole fricking video to talk about a specific brand of tissues then mentioning that specific brand in every video instead of just saying “tissues”.

That tissue thing was so annoying! I unsubscribed from them on youtube because their videos just became so fake.

In my opinion sponsorship is ok and it is obviously best if there is full disclosure. Reviewing products honestly is the best policy because it will show your readers you can be trusted to say the truth!

I honestly don’t mind youtubers / bloggers being sponsored/ making money from what they’re doing/ receiving samples as long as what they’re saying is their genuine opinion and they’re not pushing certain brands all the time. People who do that just become annoying and I unsubscribe from their channels/ blogs. Like you said in your video, if you like something anyway and are offered money to review it, you would be stupid to not take the opportunity! I really appreciate your thoughts about not just agreeing to only say positive things about product in order to get money from a company. Thanks for being honest with your viewers 🙂 x

Don’t let the haters get you down. I enjoy reading all your blogs on a daily basis sponsored or un sponsored. I think the problems come when it is obvious that the blogger isn’t a fan of the product and writes a positive newspaper article rather than a blog with personality as they would normally. Your always truthful and at the end of the day you put so much effort into your blog. Why should you not have some benefits!!

I’m fine with sponsored posts as long as it’s something relevant! I hate reading a review on a topic and seeing something that seems a little odd like ‘I was just writing this with my new Biro’ (for example) and then at the end you see the whole post was sponsored by that company and I think ah that’s what it was about then! That’s just artificial and I do feel a little duped then. But if you’re just getting paid for reviewing something you were genuinely going to talk about then I don’t see the issue there 🙂

I really don’t think sponsorship should be a huge deal! It helps out bloggers a bit, and it’s no different to seeing an item endorsed in a magazine! 🙂

I have no problem with sponsored posts and videos, so long as the old saying ‘ Honesty is the best policy’ is put in to play. And we all know you’re sincere with your opinions!
Also, on a side note, I think it is great that you’ve addressed a topic that other bloggers, and youtubers, shy away from.

    Jade 🙂
