I have to say, I REALLY wanted to love this, I’ve been searching for the best mattifying products recently, I’ve read copious reviews but unfortunately for every person that claims a product to be their holy grail there’s another to dismiss it as useless. When it comes to skincare (which effectively this is) it’s very individual and it’s unlikely you’re going to get a good recommendation, you have to try it for yourself. With that in mind I looked to the more expensive products hoping you get what you pay for, I discovered that Illamasqua had launched a matte counterpart to their massively hyped Hydra Veil and I can’t lie.. it was an impulse purchase. There are very few reviews out theer right now from people that weren’t sent this product for free and I’m not saying that they’re dishonest because that would be to say that every PR sample I receive I review favourably which is not the case at all but I can’t understand how everyone else seemed to love it. I didn ‘t even find a write up with a snippet of constructive criticism, EVERYONE loved it and it did absolutely nothing to control my shine whatsoever.
The packaging is very luxe, it looks expensive (it bloody well should) and when you open it up there’s a little scoop inside which gives you (apparently) the right amount of product for your whole face. Providing I’m using it correctly (which I almost hope I’m not) I’d agree with that and if that’s all you need for your whole face this will last a really long time and if it actually works for you I’d say it would make it good value for money. The product is lightly scented, it’s fruity.. kind of reminds me of apricot fromage frais. It’s not going to be to everyone’s taste but I like it. It doesn’t feel like a primer, it’s not thick and silicone based like every other matte primer I’ve tried which I like, it’s weightless but once again it did nothing for me so it’s not such a benefit.
All I can think is that the other reviews I read were written by people who expected less. If I still powdered throughout the day I could have been matte but I am looking for something that means I don’t have to do that. Maybe some people are so oily that even touching up powder doesn’t help and for those people this is some kind of miracle but for me it made zero difference and I’m all the more annoyed because it was SO expensive. I very rarely spend that kind of money on a non-colour cosmetic. I don’t mind spending money on a lipstick which I know I will keep forever or a blush that will last a long time – I know the colours they will be and even if I don’t use them they form part of a collection of makeup, I can justify them. When a product like a primer doesn’t work I don’t cherish it because it had special packaging or it was limited edition I just put it away in a drawer and wish I’d never wasted £30 on that damn thing.
If you have tried this I would love to know what you think, if there’s a way to use it to make it work, any tricks etc I’m all ears because I will continue to use it for using its sake because I’ve bought it and I don’t want to waste it
