No Buy-Athalon

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJanuary is a time most of us have to tighten our purse strings. After an extravagant December of gift giving and food shopping it seems like a long stretch til payday, doesn’t it? My only resolution this year is to think twice about my spending and better manage my money so I thought a ‘no buy’ would be a great way to kick start that. I have my eye on one special purchase I’d like to make at the end of next month so I have a goal but the main purpose is to show myself how much money I could save if I didn’t fritter it away at Costa. It’s not the money I spend on high ticket items that I miss it’s the Β£20 here and Β£10 there that I don’t even think about but at the end of the month totals more than I care to share. i did my sales shopping (and was remarkably restrained, though I do say so myself) on boxing day and will be avoiding all online sales as that’s where it’s easy to get carried away. In a store you carry the item around while you shop, you might even try it on.. there are so many hurdles, even the queue itself, online it’s a few clicks away from being yours and that’s a dangerous tool in the wrong (read: MY) hands. No non essential shopping for me this month and I hope some of you will join me in this challenge. It’s the month we feel the least flush but the offers are often too hard to resist so we end up spending more than we would on a GOOD month.

I always enjoy ‘shop my stash’ posts from others so I will be sharing a weekly selection of products and a ‘face of the week’ with you all from Sunday as well as some brilliant budget beauty products I’ve been trialling recently. I might even throw in some DIY beauty fixes for those of you REALLY looking to pinch the pennies but if there’s anything special you’d like me to cover just let me know. It’s going to be an interesting month for this spendaholic but hopefully it will inspire some new ideas and fresh content for you guys.

Who’s with me?

I am totally with you! I think I have enough of a stash from Christmas to last me until at least Feb 1st! πŸ˜‰ Love your blog and YouTube channel btw. πŸ™‚

Great post. I’m tightening the purse this month, I need to start using some of the stuff I already have instead of buying more, not only am I running out of space but I’m drowning in unused products and spending so unnecessarily!

Hi, I just joined your blog and I like it a lot. I just told my husband the same thing about tightening belts in January but somehow I don’t think he believed me! I’m determined though so I’m glad I’m not alone in the challenge. On a different note, I’m not very good with makeup at all, I like the idea of it but scared to make myself look like the Avon lady next door but one, and this makes me feel really awkward when it comes to buying basics. I’d love a post on a simple makeup for a weekday that would include a nice base (I use no7 bb cream because I don’t dare to venture to foundation land) and Estee Lauder 2 in 1 (compact) mineral makeup on top. ( I mean is that even ok to use on top of each other?) I guess you get my gist.. xxx

Yes I think my husband is hopeful but doubtful too lol. Al the more reason to prove them wrong, right? I will definitely put something together on basic makeup, I don’t wear much day to day for work etc so hopefully my everyday face will be useful. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to what goes where or with what so no reason you shouldn’t layer them if you like the finish/cover you get x

Oh my God, Netflix killed me putting up the first 50 episodes of Roseanne and no more, I’ve been waiting for it to come back in TV for years so I ended up buying the complete collection on DVD earlier today but that’s my splurge for the month lol

Good for you! I have been considering putting myself on a no-buy, too. I’ve got plenty and it’s high time I use it instead of constantly adding more to my collection. You’ve inspired me to think a little harder about doing a no-buy for the next few months!

    Cheers to a new year!

I find it much easier to curb spending when I’m ‘saving for something’ even if I manage to save more than I need it almost gives me a pre-shopping buzz haha

I was just talking to my partner about this too. I have seriously gone overboard on Ebay this past 2 weeks, so have to reign in my spending. Its just so hard when you see YouTubers talking about all the new high end products that they have just purchased and in my head Im shouting “I need that” even though my bank account is crying out at me “NOOOOOO” lol.

I may have already ordered some stuff in the sales… Opssy πŸ˜‰
Seriously, though, I ordered things I really wanted for a long time because, like you, I’m going to avoid unnecessary purchases, no matter how good of a deal! We can do this!! πŸ˜‰

Think I’m going to join you. Going to try and make this year a bit more thrifty.
Ps. Is there any reason why I have to click through to your website instead of your posts coming up in my bloglovin feed now?:(

I think I’ll join you in that. I do have a Mac gift card from christmas so if I start feeling a bit weak in the middle of the month I can spend that instead haha.

I honestly would love to do this with you since I failed miserably the last time I tried, but the whole month of January is the DUBAI SHOPPING FESTIVAL!! How do I stop myself when all the shops call my name with their 50% discounts?!

I’m with you! I work at The Body Shop that is also next to a boots, so I am constantly tempted! I need to work my way through what I’ve got. I’ve given my Boots advantage card to my husband as I’m unlikely to spend if I can’t also get the points!

I’m also trying to do a low-buy to start the year. I just did an inventory of my makeup, skin care and nail polish. I was shocked at some of the numbers. This inventory is going to help me resist buying new items until I use up some of what I already have.

I think I’ll join you in this, I’ve already decided to try to finish off products that I have previously bought rather than buy anything new.

I think that I will be pretty much avoiding spending this month too. I’m well stocked up on everything now apart from my S.Spa day cream, which I have the money put by for, for when it goes back on offer, then I’ll stock up on that and I’m set for a good while!! I am enjoying using up things that I’ve started and using different make up items that have been somewhat neglected. I’ve hubby’s 50th to save for so that should keep me away from the Boots aisles for a bit!!
