Not Your Average Guru – Maybe Not Then But What About Now?

Who remembers this video? I was trawling my YouTube archives today to find examples of camera quality for an upcoming blog post and stumbled upon this little gem. I remember receiving such a huge response (relative to my online following at the time) after I published it and looking back at it now I can see why. I also can’t believe I’d only been making videos for 6 months when I filmed it. Bizarre.

I don’t think there are many of us who can honestly say that being part of the beauty community online hasn’t changed them in some way. Whether it be that you’re spending more money on makeup than you’d like or you’ve just improved a skill.. for me I started out on a serious budget because I didn’t have a job but my financial situation has changed since then and I’m now much more comfortable. I wanted to be a bit of a niche blogger who told you where you could save money where others at the time seemed to be MAC dependent.. I knew not everyone had the budget for that and in truth I’d never even been to a MAC counter before I was on YouTube yet within a few short months I wanted everything and I had the money to buy it. I was slowly turning in to every other beauty girl so this video was basically me checking myself and telling you I’d recognised the change. I feel like this video is relevant again now as although I still shop at cheaper places 80% of the time I do have that 20% splurge because I can afford it and maybe I need to look again and think, is this really worth the money?

Some products are a treat – a MAC lipstick would fall into this category for me, others are just better – Urban Decay Eyeshadow, I’m looking at you but most are no better at the beauty hall than in Boots and the day I rave about a £30 foundation as a must have is the day you know I’ve crossed over to the dark side. I still think I have the right balance but I hope that the majority of you will look at my higher end reviews as a serious stamp of approval because I’m NOT your ‘average guru’ and I DON’T just spend £20 on anything so if I’m telling you it’s worth the money I really believe it. *NOTE* – A lot of it still isn’t though.

If you saw that video the first time, thanks for sticking with me, I didn’t intend to post this today it was a totally impromptu post but perhaps it fits in with Blogging month as in the video I do outline how YouTube changed me and what I learned in the first few months.

I enjoyed reading this post. I’m 16 and watching youtube videos has got me into makeup. Now all I think about is new products I want to buy and reading blogs made me want to start my own blog. I have only brought drugstore makeup and i only have a higher end lipstick&blusher that was given to me. I want to start buying high end makeup but I only want it for the name like Chanel,YSL etc, do i really need it though?

This is really shallow but your hair looks amazing in this video!

And I actually really needed this video, to be honest. I don’t even youtube, blog or anything (though I’m thinking about starting) and I STILL get this mentality of having to try things because someone I follow says it’s amazing. x_x I have enough impulse spending problems without enabling, so I’ll just say thank you for posting this, I really needed the reminder.

haha I was thinking the same thing lol.. like damn wish I’d left it like that!
I’m in a different place now than I was then because I can justify buying new stuff just to review for you guys cause my blog now earns revenue but I don’t NEED them for myself and as you say it’s something you need to be reminded of sometimes!

I came across your blog mid-August and followed your vlogust which was good fun. I’ve even saved a little and bought several of your recommendations such as MUA foundation and blusher – items I would never have bought before because I thought that those items had to be high end. Like you I don’t like spending a massive amount of money just because of a name, but some items are worth it despite the name being Dior/Mac/Chanel. So, thank you from a newbie with a budget!

      Thanks for reading/watching 🙂
I don’t think it matters what the label is so long as it works and I’m of the opinion that there are A LOT of products that it makes no difference how much you spend.. but there are definitely the occasional ones that are worth the splurge

I’m right there with u. When I go on clothing websites and see basic vest tops for like a tenner I’m like eff off I could go to primark and get 3 for that price. The only high end make up I own is a bit of benefit and some urban decay. I do go out and buy things because bloggers talk about them but usually its less than a tenner so its not really a problem. I have just bought 2 UD lipsticks but that’s not YouTube’s fault lol.

The odd thing is that I’m SO tight when it comes to clothes haha.. but for £30 I can’t get anything really awesome from say topshop but I could buy something seriously luxurious from a beauty counter

I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I do love how you’re not constantly talking about high-end products, because as you said, not everyone can afford it. I like to treat myself now and again but most of the time I stick to the drugstore. xx

oh everyone loves a treat and theres nothing quite like a chanel lipstick to make you feel a bit special but it’s not NECESSARY and that’s the bit we have to remember

I think it looks good for viewers too some youtubers remove their first videos so you can’t see them. I think we justify buys that we want also because we’ve seen somebody else say ‘yes it’s good’. Enjoyed watching this! :)xxx

Hahah – I tweeted this video not so long ago cus it made me laugh so much. 🙂 I think ‘treats’ are a wonderful and most people can relate to wanting to splurge every now and again!! 🙂

Ive been watching you vids and reading your blog for about and year and a half now,but just a few months ago was looking at some of your older vids and came across this one! Who cares if you splurge sometimes! we all do,and secretly love it too! and one thing I love about you is that when you do treat yourself, your then always on the look out for something to compare it to that is cheaper, or more affordable, to share with everyone else! 🙂 kinda been inspired by you to start my own blog recently, been reading yours for so long and always wanted to join the whole beauty community for years,so finally done it! just wish I had the confidence to start a youtube channel, but cant see that happening anytime soon!! haha! sorry for the big long rambly comment btw! xo
