I know it’s not quite 2014 but you usually make your resolutions ahead of time, right? I already filmed a video about them for which I did not plan and I always regret writing the post AFTER because my thoughts are better formed and the post is generally much more coherent but what are ya gonna do? That actually leads me nicely to my first resolution..
1. Care less.
Not care less as such but just relax more. I put so much pressure on myself when it comes to my blog and YouTube that in 2013 I felt it kind of took over my life. I would be so stressed out about getting a video out by a certain time and really when you sit down and look back, would it have mattered if that post went up a day later.. or not at all? Sometimes there’s a monetary reason for the rush and pressure but most of the time I’ve committed myself to too much and I haven’t taken a step back to assess whether I really need to do it all. My internet stuff has given me some amazing opportunities and best of all it’s allowed me to be home with my son 5 days a week which I am so grateful for but once my blog was my main source of income I became some kind of workaholic monster. What’s the point of having more time at home with your family if you never stop working? This year I resolve to take time off if I need it and have at least one (preferably several) nights a week without my laptop on my knee.
2. Make better use of social media
This isn’t something I touched on in my video (damn) and it’s more of a ‘professional’ resolution than the first but if I intend to grow my audience I need to put more time into putting myself and my content out there rather than just creating it. I have spent a year putting out as much new stuff as I could muster but if I don’t promote it in the right way it’s like the proverbial tree in the forest. This year I intend to create less (but better quality) content and focus more on promoting it. The two social networks I don’t use enough are pinterest and facebook and another time saver in the evenings will be Hoot Suite (an tweet scheduler).
3. Go on non-shopping related days out
This was a partial resolution last year and one I didn’t do very well with. I did save money and we bought a new car but we continued to spend out weekends at our various local shopping haunts. I want to plan more days out with the kids, we have a Disney (Paris) trip coming up that I’m really excited about and depending on how that goes I’d like to take a few weekends away as a family. Up to now it’s been tough traveling with Milo as he doesn’t sleep well in unfamiliar environments but I’m hoping as he gets older that will be easier.. Disney will be the ultimate test. Aside from that we have a local zoo and so many parks, when the weather is nice I want to actually get out there and do something as a family, recently every weekend is the same and I want to change that.
They are my 3 main goals, I’m not promising anything diet or fitness related because that never works, does it? I want to use my taime more effectively with regards to my blog and YouTube so that I can spend more time with my family and I want that time to be better. If this is going to be a long term thing I need to find a way to fit it in with my life rather than the other way around.
What are your goals for 2014?
