Revlon Matte Balms – The Review

IMG_8739 copy

I am OBSESSED with Revlons new Matte Balms so rather than give you random colour posts I decided to give a full run down of all the shades I have.. which I believe is all bar 3 – which didn’t appeal to me. There’s a great range from neutrals to poppy brights and they’re almost all brilliant but there are a couple of exceptions which I’ll talk about in a moment. The best thing about these crayons is that although they are a matte finish (my favourite) they aren’t at all drying, the formula is so creamy and even after hours of wear I can still rub my lips together comfortably -I’m sorry, that sounds wrong. They really are great though, long lasting, relatively smudge resistant and you can touch up throughout the day if you need without feeling like you’re wearing layers and layers of lipstick.

FYI – The lipstick stand is from eBay – link

As you can see the bolder colours are more opaque and generally look a little nicer on, the paler ones can come off patchy and if you have dry/flakey lips they’re not very forgiving. That being said I’m not put off at all. These are close ups and the colours I wear most often don’t accentuate any niggling imperfections, if I was going to wear Audacious for example I’d likely get out the lip scrub first. I know some people have totally written them off because they do cling to dryness but to those people I would say.. it’s a matte lip product!! If you’re not a fan of matte finishes then you probably wont like these but if you are they will likely be the best thing you’ve tried. They’re all the best bits of a matte lip with none of the negatives, super comfortable to wear and yes okay they may not look perfect on imperfect lips but they look a damn sight better than full on dry mattes I own – MAC RiRi Woo, I’m looking at you.

Unapologetic is my favourite, I bought it while we were in New York and wore it the whole time we were there so I guess it has good memories but it’s just a great colour, I love brights and this is somehow a day time neon version of the hot pinks I would wear in the evening. There’s something luminous but somehow subtle about it that makes me feel totally cool with wearing it to work with a slick of mascara and as I said in the video below if I had to get rid of all but one this would be saved for sure. – Available online here

So.. do you love them or hate them?

I rushed out to get my hands on Unapologetic when I saw it on your instagram during your New York trip. I have to say ive only worn it a couple of times as my lips really need to be in a bit better condition for it to look good on me. It does cling to the drier patches but not to the point where its too obvious so I think I will try and get hold of some more colours soon. I totally agree that these are the best matte lip product out there, or at least out of the ones ive tried.

I think it must depend on how much care lol.. I just don’t really since they last so well but if you want a perfect application you’re going to want something non matte

      • 19 March, 2014 / 10:30 am

I think ill try Striking and Elusive next.
You’re lucky coz so many lip shades look good on you. I like the colour of Complex but I reckon ill look like a corpse if I try it lol.

I’m not sure I’d wear the nude alone, maybe with a gloss but it I’m not big on the pale, pale lips.. I prefer mixing them

I think that’s the thing.. if you love matte you’ll love these and if you don’t you might be able live with these lol

Unapologetic is my favourite too, don’t think I’ve ever owned such a vivid pink! x

Have you tried the MUA Power Pouts? I assume they are a dupe given the similar packaging. I have 2 of them (closest to sultry and unapologetic based on your swatches) and find they last ages and are not too drying.

I bought one on the way to a conference when I had forgotten my lippy and wanted something cheap. I ended up wearing it all the time and bought 2 more (sadly lost one)

they’re just not the same thing at all for me though, the nars are much less creamy and comfortable.. also great but very different

I already own Elusive, but after seeing your photos, I really want to pick up Standout and Striking – they’re both gorgeous!

I caved the other week and went for Sultry as its a shade that I cant say I own already in my collection and I love it! I would have automatically gone for Unapologetic or Audacious but I have a good strong collction of bright pink lippies already, and I bought the orange shade from the original Revlon kissable balms. Unfortunately I do suffer from scabby lips so think I’ll probably stick with my lip butters 🙂

      19 March, 2014 / 5:01 pm

I do have SO many brights lol.. see I find the same with the paler lip butters for them looking a bit rubbish on flaky lips but the brights are fine

  7. 19 March, 2014 / 2:48 pm

Im not a huge fan of matte products, as they normally dry out my lips, or make them appear dry. I have been tempted to pick one of these up, but Im still not quite convinced!

Oh, I love all of them!

  10. 19 March, 2014 / 9:34 pm

They haven’t arrived in Australia yet, though they’re starting to make room in the Revlon displays. I’ve got all of the originals (Crush is my favourite), so I’m looking forward to these.! Thanks for the swatches – I think Sultry and Elusive are my favourites on your skin tone. x

  11. 19 March, 2014 / 9:49 pm

I have, and love, Sultry and have been eying up Unapologetic but I think I’m more of a lacquer balm girl – I like a bit of shine 🙂

I absolutely love these matte balms. Love it so much that I own 6 shades. LOL!

  15. 20 March, 2014 / 10:20 am

These all look beautiful on you! Unapologetic is probably my favorite too as it’s such a gorgeous colour and even though it’s super bright, it’s still very wearable. Perhaps the matte texture is what helps to give it more of a day time look. I love the versatility of matte lip products as they can easily become glossy with a slick of Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream or even vaseline over the top. xx

I may have to stock up while Boots are still doing their 3-4-2 offer!

I have a couple of these – I love the colour of Complex, but have struggled with it looking patchy (the hazard of releasing it mid-winter!!). But it does apply much better with a little balm underneath 🙂

  18. 20 March, 2014 / 10:16 pm

I have all of these shades except for Standout, but now I’ve seen it in this post I really want that one too! My favourite is Elusive as it’s a very wearable everyday shade xx

I’ve just started my own beauty (and books) blog and I reviewed these too 🙂 I agree about lips needing to be in ok condition but I think you’re right when you say that they’re a damn sight better than a lot of other matte lipsticks! I went for two colours you didn’t have and I’d love it if you could take a look at mine and let me know what you think
