Starting Over – Diary Of A Spendaholic

Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 20.33.09When I first started my YouTube channel I was out of work and totally broke. I had no idea it would become anything let alone as large a part of my life as it has and I had even less clue how important the name of it would be! I effectively branded myself as someone who would talk about only affordable products from that day and so when I got a job and wasn’t quite so skint I met with (lets say constructive) criticism when I spoke about  more expensive brands. Almost 4 years later and my budget has far surpassed that of my previously unemployed self and my purchases reflect that. Now I’ve gone back and forth about this, one minute I think it’s my channel and I should be able to talk about whatever the hell I like but I know many of my viewers subscribed to me because they are on a tighter budget and I have to appreciate that the niche that restricts me also gained me the following I’m so grateful to have. So although this idea is not a new one it’s taken me more than a year to finally bite the bullet and start fresh with a new channel.

Those of you who know me outside of this blog may know that I already have a vlog channel which chronicles all things non beauty as well as the day in the life, follow me round style vlogs. I also maintained a ttc/pregnancy/baby channel until about a year ago (when Milo turned 1) so this will technically be my 4th YouTube channel.. excessive? Perhaps but they all serve their own purpose. Those of you who enjoy a good beauty review might not want to see me chatting about nothing on my walk to work and vice versa.. this new channel will hopefully enable me to strip out any more expensive products as well as clothing/accessories videos from missbudgetbeauty to keep it pure and true to it’s name. I’m really hoping that those who are not in to higher end brands will be happy with this change and those who are interested will follow me there as well. Either way this will be a standalone channel that could exist on it’s own and shouldn’t affect the content I’m currently making at all.

Here on my blog I generally feel comfortable talking about whatever I like anyway so there will be no change here.. my readers are a lot more relaxed about the term budget and generally seem to appreciate it’s fluidity and that it differs from person to person.. one day I will review MUA, the next MAC and none of you seem to care. I love you guys. I wish it was the same for my videos but hey.. this will be a fun little adventure, starting fresh is always exciting.

I’m overwhelmed that so many of you have already shown your support and subscribed and if you’re interested in seeing more hauls, beauty reviews, handbags (I can finally review my designer wares) and OOTD’s you might be interested in Diary Of A Spendaholic

I think you should definitely do what is best for you however, I think it’s ridiculous people gave you crap about reviewing or purchasing more expensive products. I think you do a good mix and you will say when the products are a little pricier. Regardless, I have always enjoyed you and will continue to read and watch 🙂

I tried ‘splurge week’ in the summer where I did just high end for a full week and told people in advance etc but some still didn’t like it so I think it’s safer to keep it separate

A high end product could be a budget product to someone else….budget to me means you budgeted to afford that product…im not of a high income and most my products are high street but if i want a high end product i ‘budget’ to afford it…but i think its good you want to please your viewers…x

I totally agree and have argued that for the last few years but if I’m honest when I named my channel budget did mean cheaper.. I was ‘on a budget’ and yes my budget is now bigger blah blah but ultimately I don’t want to isolate viewers that are still in my original position.. we’ve all been there and I have so many people say they love my channel because I don’t talk about Chanel etc so i have to respect that that’s why they’re watching

You definitely shouldn’t feel constrained on your own blog and videos so I’m glad you’ve decided to start another channel if that’ll help with you being able to review the things that you’d like 🙂 I definitely love the flexibility of my blog, I even review things like tea and it’s a small blog but I can be happy reviewing the things I like 🙂 I will definitely follow your new channel and enjoy your reviews here as well!

I love your blogs and your vlogs. You have inspired me to start talking about things I love and blogging often but I do agree that it is yours and yes budget beauty implies cheaper items but everyone has their own budget and one month I may try cheaper items and then I may try something more expensive. I sometimes trawl charity shops and Primark or then I go and offload a month’s budget one one item. If you have fifty pounds you can buy a lot of beauty if you buy cheaper or you can get two items from a premium brand so although I know you have created a new channel ( which I will be following), I don’t feel its right for people to pressure you. They should be inspired to look for alternatives themselves xx

It’s a little bit sad that you can’t talk about whatever you want, but I think it’s great that you are separating it out too (so I won’t go and buy something “affordable” when I’m trying to save money) and I’m hoping it means more Khila? So no complaints there! 🙂 All the best with your new channel!

I don’t understand people who complain when you talk about more expensive things. Just because you aren’t rolling in money it doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself or save up for things. I would understand if most of the things you talked about were really expensive (a lot of youtubers are doing that now and I admit it really annoys me when every video is about something I can’t afford) but that’s not the case with your videos. Most of what you talk about is “drugstore” priced and you talk about brands like beauty UK and MUA that most other people would just ignore because they’re so cheap. But if you want to make another channel then I’m ok with that too. I’ll be subscribing and hopefully it will shut some people up haha.

I’m on a bit of a budget but I always thought when you included a more pricey item it was because it was worth it. Have already subscribed to the new channel 🙂

Already subscribed – I understand why you’ve made the channel but I really wish you hadn’t had to. It’s totally unreasonable for people to think that they can dictate what you make videos on – Ok so you’re missbudgetbeauty doesn’t mean you can never treat yourself! Not to mention the fact that channels evolve, at the end of the day the people that watch your channel may be looking for budget products but there’s this really amazing thing where they can decide to Not Watch a video about higher end things rather than moaning about it.

(I’m someone who’s always on a budget, though hoping to get some higher end with my xmas money – So I’m saying this as someone who would be more inclined to watch videos about budget products – That said, I enjoy your videos enough that I watch higher and lower end alike)

Good luck with the channel, I hope it goes just as well as you’re others

I love your old channel and also your new channel, your blog and vlog channel, well basically I love you and all you do. I can’t wait for the new content on the channel to role in. I personally think that it was your channel so it should of been up to you what you uploaded but hey ho, that’s what some people are like. I hope you find as much success on you Diaryofaspendaholic channel as you have on your blog and MBB channel.
You really are truly one of my favourite Youtubers and Vlogers. Thanks for all the videos and blogs.

I think it’s important to try pricier products out, even if you’re normally more budget-orientated. It gives you perspective, and means you can give an honest comparison between high and low end products.
If you had never bought the Naked palette, then you wouldn’t have known just how good of a dupe the MUA one was.
That aside, you have every right to treat yourself, and your blog has every right to evolve. Sounds like they’re pretty ungrateful to me, you don’t charge them to watch, you share because you want to, and ask nothing in return. You wouldn’t tell someone the present they bought you was rubbish, and you want something else instead – this isn’t really any different!

I dont think there is a need for a new channel budget for me now im older implies sticking to a set amount of money you can afford. and whether you spend that on cheaper products or not is really up to you. I think switching to another new channel may put alot of pressure on you in the way of am I posting enough to both am I neglecting tge old content ir focusing too much on this new direction ect. I just love seeing the variety on MB.

I’m definitely going ahead with the new channel, I know what you mean but there’s 100% more videos I could make if I wasn’t penned in to ‘budget’ – you and I know budget is a fluid term but not everyone does. To be fair anyone reading this is likely to say it’s unecessary because like I said readers of my blog are pretty cool about it but I get a lot of stick for talking about more expensive stuff on YouTube.

I plan to make my beauty channel more reviews and favourites etc and my new channel more shopping, outfits and such.. stuff that yes I could get cheaper but I just wanted lol

You should definitely be able to post things about what you want. I sincerely hope all the best for you and your channels! I love everything that you post, whether it’s high end or high street. I just subscribed to your newest channel 🙂 xo

You can’t please everyone. It’s so unfair that you feel the need to include a disclaimer in any higher end products. The wonderful thing about the blog being called BUDGET rather than CHEAP is that everyone’s budget is different so essentially you’re catering to that by including a range of prices. Keep doing what you’re doing, this is everything I want from a blog!
