The Advent Candle-ndar

Earlier in the season i had several requests to post about the various beauty advent calenders that launched this year and I was going to, I swear.. but then I didn’t. I looked over everything I could find and my past experience led me to the conclusion that I only really wanted the ones that cost the earth and if you’re going to spend mega bucks then you may as well just buy what you like rather than roll the dice on what could be a very expensive let down. I’m not saying I’ll never have a beauty calender again but this year I was more interested in the non-beauty (but still non-chocolate) and the front runner was from Yankee Candle.

I’ve seen variations of this in the past and always been interested so I practically bit their hand off when they offered to send it for review this year.. but is it all I hoped for and more? I don’t know yet. I toyed with leaving it entirely as a surprise (for me) but realised that I had one burning (pun intended) question that I felt you would also want answering before parting with your cash. Do the tea lights actually do anything? I popped open a couple of doors at random and have burned the candles within over the past day or two and honestly? I’m just not sure. 1. I have no idea what the scents are because there are no markings. PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong here and if I’m just not seeing it but aside from an educated guess I have nothing. 2. They burn for around 3 or 4 hours which isn’t too bad if like me you light candles in the evening BUT 3. there was virtually no scent unless I stood over them and really tried to smell them. I’m not sure if it’s just the fragrances I’ve had so far that are perhaps not the best example of the tea lights or if they’re just a bit rubbish unless you have 10 burning at once but they were quite a disappointment. I loved the idea of a taster pack of Yankee Candles and a new scent every day in December but whereas I’ve had nothing bad to say about any jar (medium or larger) candle I’ve tried the smaller sizes just don’t seem to be capable of packging that same punch.

I’d love to hear from those of you who use theseor have had the Yankee advent before, I’d be interested to know if you’re experience was any different. It’s such a nice idea in theory and I believe there are some votives scattered behind the doors but even so.. I think the little versions are just a bit meh unfortunately.

I personally love Yankee but I’d never bother with the tealight advent calendars – they are just a rip off and what’s the point of one tealight a day. Isn’t the purpose of an advent calendar to open a door a day? Who would want to burn one tealight at a time? It’s no fun if you have to open 4 days before it’s worth lighting anything.

They have done boxes of votives/samplers which you could treat like an advent calendar.

In short, no it’s not you – individual tealights don’t really give off much fragrance at all. They are really only good for candle-scaping alongside jars and melts.

Oh and I meant to tell you – was your favourite Christmas scent Winter Wonderland? I’ve seen it around in a couple of places this year. And there’s a very similar Village Candle available.

I spent £20 in Sally’s today getting 3 China Glaze and 1 OPI Christmas polishes. I thought about a nail calendar but then I decided to invest the money into polishes I really want. What a shame the candles aren’t any good. I will get some scented tealights – but at Ikea so they are cheap and cheerful and even if they don’t smell while burning (they certainly smell by themselves) they will look pretty in red!

I’vwe found that the smaller yankee candles don’t smell anywhere near as strong as the medium, large or even small jars, which is so disappointing! I hope the rest of the advent calendar lives up to your expectations!

Love Yankee candles but refuse to buy the tea lights as they do nothing.. So disappointing, the votives aren’t the best either, they give off smell the first time you use them but that’s it.

I think a candle advent calendar is such a good idea, but it’s a shame that the tea lights didn’t do much in terms of scent!

I totally adore Yankee Candle but only the medium & large jars or the tartelettes. Last Christmas i got as a gift a little pack of mini burner like the one on your post and I did not like them at all, they barely smell. Like you I had to really get very close (few inches) to just about smell something so I only burned them as a decorative purpose rather than for their scent which was almost non-existent .Now I only stick to jars as I am never disappointed with them. Lately i got the Toasted Marshmallow medium jar and totally loving it.

I love candles for atmosphere but always felt even with Yankee candles that I could only smell it when I was right up close to it. When my son set the coffee table alight with a pair of headphones vs a tea light that was the end of candles for me! Have you tried Scentsy yet? A safer alternative to candle without any soot or smoke? I’m a total convert and my home has never smelt better. No more plug ins either. I would love to send you some samples!

I feel like if they did a wax melt advent calendar I’d be all over that because they are so much better for burning & you actually get a lot more for your money. I really wanted a candle advent calendar this year but I don’t see the point in tea lights or votives because they’re so pointless and the votives can be quite messy.

I’ve said the same! A melt calendar would cost more but be so much better value!

I’ve wanted to purchase an alternative advent calendar for a little while now but I’m definitely going to steer clear of this one after your review – thank you for helping me make a decision! It’s so disappointing when a product doesn’t arrive as you expect it to! x

They should make the yankee advent calendar with the wax melt tarts instead of a tea light behind each door! The tarts smell waaaay stronger, I would snap one up if they did x

I’ve never owned one of the Yankee Candle advent calendars before, but I would love to own this one! I’m obsessed with tealights lately after getting an awesome ghost tealight holder. ^_^

I already bought mine, wishing now I hadn’t if is as bad as that.
Was cheaper at boots at £20 though.
Glad tesco and asda do the medium and large jars as so much cheaper than buying at Yankee candle shop. Plus u don’t have to treck into town.
Thanks for review I will find out soon how well they work in my house.

After the comments I think I will save mine until I have a few of the same scent to burn

I love my advent calendar but I really annoys me that it doesn’t say which scent is which! The only thing I can assume is that the list of scents on the side of the box are the order they go in? Like left to right?

Nah I don’t think it is on mine but mine looks different to the one in the pic that MBB put up.
Had the tea light next to me and it smelled lovely. N was surprised that in the end the room did smell of it. But the tea light lasted quite awhile.
