The Balm – Schwing

IMG_3476This is a bit of a love hate product for me, I absolutely love everything I’ve tried from The Balm and will definitely be adding to my collection however I wasn’t uber excited to try their liquid liner. Why? The packaging. For a brand that does packaging SO well this is such a let down, so boring and cheap looking.. it could be a Rimmel liner with a stick around it really, couldn’t it? I feel similarly about their lipsticks.. cute secondary cardboard packaging then you get it out and it’s a plain silver tube. The general idea there is it’s a bullet.. the lipsticks are James Bond-esque in theme so there’s at least a reason they can claim for that one but it seems that they spent their glossy budget on 80% of their stuff and the remainder was a bit of an afterthought.

IMG_3477IMG_3474IMG_3454Packaging aside the product itself is excellent. I’m a huge lover of liquid liner and recently dabbled with gel as I prefer a real brush for a little more control but this tipped me back over to team liquid. The brush is so fine I can really achieve a super thin line if I want to and the liquid is lovely and opaque. The worst liquid liners have totally stiff applicators and a watery formula and this is the opposite. It’s a felt tip but you’d never know it as it behaves more like a brush, gives 100% control but picks up a lot of product meaning you need to dip less often.. a seamless application is quicker and neater. The ‘handle’ is comfortable to hold which is important since you need the steadiest of hands and not all liner lids are created equal, folks.. some can be really quite awkward to hold. This is long and tapered, just a dream. Lastly the finish, totally matte which is what I prefer, some people like a glossy liner, I don’t. I prefer matte because I think it looks more natural but also because it stays put for longer and in my experience a matte liner is less likely to crumble.

I do have one negative, I’ve never had a liquid liner transfer on to my brow before this one. I do have slightly hooded eyes and when I use gel this is occasionally a problem however liquid usually sets quickly and doesn’t smudge. I’ve experienced smudging with this which is not excellent but the application is so swift I still use it every single day and have done for almost a month so I can’t tell you it would put me off purchasing when I run out.

What’s your favourite liquid liner?

Get over it Kayla gosh some people are so irrational! Honestly “it is a love hate relationship ” get over yourself who do you think you are !

First of all, I think I’m Khila, not Kayla but I’ll let you off since you’re obviously having a bad day. It’s a love hate product because it works well but transfers which is not great.. I thought that was quite rational as I explained what I do and do not like about it but hey, every review is open to interpretation and if it wasn’t useful for you then hopefully it will be for someone else

Sorry it is this stupid autocorrect I know your name is Khila don’t worry !x but it is quite irrational saying that you love it but you hate it so you obviously don’t love it ! And people are entitled to their opinion so I would hope you would respect that! I’m just giving constructive critique to help you and others ! People just don’t respect others and that is terrible !

You are absolutely right, everyone deserves respect! You have your opinion, I just don’t agree with it. We can’t all agree about everything, if we all had the same opinions and way of expressing ourselves blogs would be obsolete. Love/hate is a common phrase that I personally felt applied here but if you dislike the term you don’t have to use it.

“People just donโ€™t respect others and that is terrible” how can u say this after being disrespectful in your comment. Is English your second language?

..& some people are so rude!

Smudging is an issue for me as my skin is so oily even around my eyes.
    Thank you for the review,

Man, I think I have the hoodyiest oiliest eyes ever. 90% of liners want to move around. The only one that’s perfect is that Tattoo Me one for Seventeen that you tried last winter. Great stuff.

Thanks for the review. Been trying different black liquid liners and this looks like a good one, save for the transferring. Might have to try it.

The only one I have used religiously is the black liner from ELF. Works pretty good, and the first one that I have been able to use regularly!

Nice review! I’ve tried a couple of products from the TheBalm and really liked them. What’s on your eyelids? It’s really pretty! x

Funnily enough it’s from the Balm, part of the Nude-Tude palette

I never use liquid liners but gelliners. The reason is that liquid liners get in to my eyelashes and that really makes a mess. Shame, because liquid liners usually are more black.

I can’t even imagine lol.. I am a gel fan though, I quite like the softer black look

This reminds me of the limecrime liquid liner with how it looks (as in the actual liner not the packaging) however the lime crime one has a brush it’s the only liquid liner I can master using as I usually use felt liners! This looks like it could be the best of both worlds!

    Super helpful review!
I seen the pictures and thought o em gee this liner looks amazing and so easy to travel with but the smudging … might give this one a miss. Like you I didn’t realise liners could do this haha.
    Thanks again ๐Ÿ™‚

I still use it almost daily so it’s not putting me off I just wanted to mention it for those who already suffer with smudging

Hi Khila, I have been following your blog and youtube for a long time. Easily one of my fave beauty peeps as you’re so down to earth and just go with the flow.

I am usually too lazy to post comments but really want to know what is on your lips?

I am sure you get many more positive comments then the unhelpful rude one I can see on this post, but I really like that you write as you feel. Anyway enough soppy talk.

Thank you!!! I’m actually wearing the coral colour I’ve raved about from British Beauty Bloggers lipstick collection for M&S.. isn’t is gorgeous?

In actual fact I have very few mean spirited commenters here on my blog but I suspect this one was a YouTube troll who came to visit. I’ve never known Khila to spell check to Kayla and the only way you’d misspell my name is if you’d heard it rather than seen in written.. ie: YouTube. In fairness even YouTube trolls have dissipated lately, I’m hoping they all ran out of steam ๐Ÿ˜‰ x

Thank you for this review! I am super picky and obviously don’t want to buy everything that comes along. Your reviews have really steered me in the right direction and rarely am I disappointed. I just bought this and I really like it!
