Okay so I know I’m on a no-buy but surely a sofa is a basic human essential? we NEED something to sit on while we blog/watch trash tv.. RIGHT?? All this avoiding buying stuff for ME has sent me into a frenzy over home wares so YES, I bought the rug (mentioned here) and YES I’ve ordered a new sofa and YES said sofa will need side tables because the old one had square arms and never needed them – BREATHE – BUT none of that counts because TECHNICALLY I’m not buying them for ME.. they’re for the FAMILY!
So now that wretched business is out of the way let’s talk about the sofa, shall we? I can’t tell you it’s the prettiest, prettiest sofa I ever saw, in fact there were others I would DIE for BUT I had to be practical. We have children (one small, one extraordinarily clumsy) and the beautiful plush, velvet I lust after is just not going to last in my house. The one I chose I did so for 3 reasons. I love the colour.. it’s the exact shade of grey I wanted, it claims to be indestructible (I’m paraphrasing but it’s supposedly life proof) and DING DING DING – it’s going to be delivered in THREE DAYS TIME! I can’t pretend that last one wasn’t a HUGE selling point, I mean who has TIME to wait EIGHT WEEKS for a sofa? No.. exactly! So it’s coming at the weekend and I’m super, duper excited about it.. can you tell?
As I mentioned our old sofa (which was seriously the biggest thing ever, I have no idea how I got it out of the room by myself but Milo was concerned about me throughout) had flat, reinforced arms so they basically served as side for drinks etc. I’ve moved in a spare sofa (okay, I’m sounding like some mad sofa lady now, I realise – it’s a blue leather hand me down, not cute!) from the garage to see how the space looks with a regular, straight, not made for giants seating area and I’m totally in love with our now almost too big-living room. The big issues I’ve found so far are – no drinks area AND no foot area. The old sofa (again, I can’t explain the size) was an odd shape and from the corner I sat in it basically made a chair/footstool (I’m wishing I took pictures before I moved it out now) so as I sit typing this now my feet are on the ground and they NO LIKEY! So not only do I need side tables but I need something to put me/our feet up on too.
Here’s what I’m liking so far – reasons are 2 fold – 1. cheap, 2. available to collect from IKEA on saturday after sofa has arrived – both excellent reasons!
The Strandmon is one I had my eye on in my last decor post – I still think it’s a contender but this darker grey might now be took much for the lighter couch. My main concern is finding one in a complementary colour rather than one which will clash.. tough! I think neutral might be safer but again this brings me back to the small and clumsy children (and adults, lets be honest) issue – I do know that the covers on the Kivik are removeable for washing though which is a bonus and I can’t help but picture it next to the Christmas Tree (yes, ALREADY, calm down!) all white and snowy looking.. I like it. It does also have an option of grey if I wanted it. Another option would be to potentially get 2 smaller foot stools like the Ekenas, I like the idea of them lined up against the radiator, very bloggy, don’t you think? And depending on which coffee table I choose they could even live underneath it.. just a thought. I”ve always like the Ektorp range so their foot stool is certainly a contender, I like the added storage (which by the way the Kivik also has) however you have to be sure to choose the colour wisely as some of the covers are insanely priced.. they vary from £75 to £150!! MADNESS!
Not a lot of variety here, all LACK, there’s a reason for this (theres always a reason, isn’t there) I have my TV on a huge LACK coffee table so it will match, they’re (again) super cheap, you can replace them when the kids scribble all over them (has and will happen) and I really like the sleek white design. The only question is which size. Ideally I’d like it to fit flush with the sofa and not look to big for what is now going to be a regular sized style but I also want enough space to potentially store toys etc underneath on the shelves. I think I am leaning towards the narrow, TV bench right now but only time will tell.
Luckily for my bank account I’m working today and tomorrow so no chance of any further online shopping for the house before the sofa arrives – EEEEEEE!!!!! – but Emma from It’sEm is coming up with her husband Chris next week and we’re going to be finalising some details on the new site we’re setting up (more on that to come) so I’m already styling pictures my head for that – laughing in the living room, looking all blogger-y and that.. okay.. I think I’ve had too much coffee..
