WEEKLY WINS #5

FILM

I have to start here because the photo needs explanation. I feel like I JUST talked about my love of film photography but I got back 3 or 4 rolls from the second half of 2023 recently and I just had all the prints come back and again I’m hit with a wave of gratitude for the past me who took them. The reason I love film so much isn’t the art of it or even the nostalgic quality, it’s that it forces me to revisit a memory in a way that feels so different to those I relive through my phone. They are literal snapshots and the imperfections allow you to step in to that moment in your mind. I don’t think I will ever stop and I can’t recommend it enough if you’ve been considering it.

MAGPIES

I am not at all superstitious, which may surprise you if you know me well but I believe in positive signs rather than the foreshadowing ones. Much as I do hold some value in the law of attraction, I don’t believe anything awful will happen to me if I focus to hard on it and I don’t believe seeing a solitary bird will bring me bad luck. THAT SAID, Karen (my friend and business partner) said she saw 2 sets of 2 magpies this week on a day we had an exciting meeting and as I was texting with her, I looked up from my phone and saw TWO MAGPIES directly in my path. Since then I’ve been spotting them everywhere and this definitely falls under “The Yellow Car Philosophy” but if we’re looking for wins to celebrate, I’m taking it.

LIGHT

What would you call the moment the funk you’re in passes? I’ve been under a cloud for a few weeks - honestly, January is historically just an awful awful month for me, next year I’m moving my birthday and our anniversary to July - and this week something seemed to clear. I had my manic day where I reshuffle and clean, I finally hung a blind I’ve been putting off hanging since November and I’m feeling generally brighter. I’m still not all the way there but those of you who ebb and flow like I do will understand what I mean when I say I know the pattern now. Nothing is forever. Whether high or low, moods and emotions flow and you can only ride the wave. I’m happy to be on a lighter one for now,

ANTICIPATION

We’ve made a start on our plans for our May trip to New York and I’ve been scoping out seating plans for Broadway shows and looking for restaurants reservations which fills me with a kind of warm glow. New York is quite possibly my very favourite place to visit, it feels like home and after 10 or so trips we can be relatively relaxed with our activities. We can see more of the city and less of the attractions and since we’ve never been in Spring before I’m particularly excited to see the cherry blossoms and I think we’re going to take the cable car across to Roosevelt Island for the first time!

Anticipation is actually a great word for this week. We’re seeing friends at the weekend to celebrate my birthday (a little late) and when I’m feeling lighter I’m always looking forward. Although the snow we had to today definitely served as a reminder to live in the moment.. Spring isn’t quite on the way just yet.
