*before we start, the baby pictures are totally gratuitous as I found them all on my old computer today and couldn’t find any actually relevant images to use so.. here we are. I make no apologies*

Over the past six months or so I’ve fallen a little out of love with blogging, I’m sure it shows. I haven’t been as eager to post and as dedicated as I previously was and one of my resolutions for 2015 was to stop forcing content both here and on YouTube. I was really pushing myself last year and I think that was in part to blame for my burn out but a lot of it was how I felt within the community. Once upon a time it was a small(er – it was never THAT small) group of people writing for fun. I know you’ve all heard this before but long story short once money is involved so do LOTS more people and the more bloggers that came along and leapfrogged the milestones I’d taken years to reach the more inadequate I felt about what I was doing here. It’s a numbers game, everyone is always talking numbers, followers, viewers, unique monthly visitors.. it quickly became a very competitive thing to do and anyone that knows me will tell you I’m not in to competition.. unless I can win 😉

The ‘community’ became a little every man for himself and so I retreated from the social side of things without which blogging is a very lonely thing. Over the past week or so I’ve made steps to reconnect and even make NEW connections (I’m now ACTIVELY using facebook and enjoying it! – link) and that feeling that this might not be for me forever was starting to go away. I was trying to get back that initial excitement when I received an email from Jane (BritishBeautyBlogger) about a new app, Periscope. I’m a creature of habit and struggle to embrace new things but Jane assured me I had to join and in the past two days on that app I have seen more generosity and support than I’ve seen in years elsewhere. It’s new and in order to grow an audience/following there you need help, obviously you can drive your own traffic but people are joining broadcasts, commenting, leaving ‘hearts’ (which I still don’t totally understand) and sending others to come and watch too. Bloggers and readers alike are banding together to make this fun new thing even MORE fun with MORE people and it’s almost like watching the rebirth of blogging itself. It’s so refreshing to see people helping people in an industry that’s become so cut throat and it’s reminded me that there’s always good to be found, you just have to know where to look for it.

IMG_5836 copyI am very lucky to be able to do this for a living (subsidised by a part time job in ‘the real world’) but I never want to become so disillusioned with blogging that I stop altogether. Even if the income dries up I’d like to think I’d still share my favourite products and rambling life updates with you.. whether you want to hear about them or not. When you make a hobby your job there’s always the danger you will stop loving it in the same way but thanks to Periscope (and Jane) I have a fresh new outlook and a new found faith in our community. Whether you’re retweeting a blog post you enjoyed, commenting on a YouTube video or recommending a site to your next door neighbour.. these are random acts of kindness, little pats on the back and more appreciated that you know!

In the spirit of sharing if you’d like to leave your own links or links to your favourite blogs etc in the comments feel free!

Honestly, it’s reminding me of back in the day – that’s what I love about it. It’s just injected some excitement into things again.. and you’re right.. people are being so supportive. Just hoping it stays that way. I don’t care really about the follower thing.. it’s so nice to see names you recognise (and new names) pop up and we’re all communicating in real time! I’m still finding my way on it but good tips are to tap your screen to send hearts (like FB likes), send lots of messages.. if you’re the one filming, keep an eye on the typed messages from views and try and answer them as you go along to keep the communication going, and also if you want to follow someone or block someone swipe right and you can do it there. The fun about it is that for now, it’s a level playing field..everyone has to start from the beginning, no matter how big. x

Absolutely! I am dropping whatever I’m doing everytime I get a notification someone’s gone live at the moment just to show support and I feel like everyone is doing the same. It’s definitely more about about the interaction than the numbers there!

But when you blog with no thought to what anyone might think you’re more open and honest than you could hope for! When you start questioning things and wondering whether something will be well received that’s when it stops being fun! I want to get that back!

I think all bloggers go through feeling like this. Just remember why you started in the first place. Those who started for money will eventually move on to whatever makes them the next quick quid, but the real bloggers, the ones who are truly passionate about what they’re blogging about and who started it to share that passion, they’ll be the ones who stick around and make the community what it really is 🙂

You’re right and there have been certain bloggers who I’ve always considered constant sources of support no matter what!

I am lucky to be a part of a great community, but I think a lot of that comes from always visiting and commenting on other blogs. I also am not more than like $5 a month on my blog, but I still love doing it. you can find tons of great blogs at although i’m a bit biased since i helped start the network 🙂 of course I’d be thrilled if you stopped by mine!

I love Jane but I don’t know how she keeps up her schedule! I took a concious break until Milo goes to school in September and I get some actual free time to do this properly so I thought I’d see what happens and how I feel after that break.

I totally get where your coming from with having days where you almost feel like writing has been forced and then in the end makes you end up getting fed up. I think it is really hard to get a work life balance but so important to remember to have fun and that there are so many loyal reader that will read your blog whenever you feel comfortable posting x

Great post, I totally agree, I’m in a blogging lull too and Periscope has totally revitalised me. I wouldn’t have the balls to do a full YT channel (too many excellent ones out there already), but Periscope allows me to dip my toe a tiny little bit into that world. I love connecting with folks, especially ones I admire and getting instant feedback, it’s kinda addictive…. I keep having to stop myself from over periscoping otherwise I would be doing it every chance I get!

Keep up the great work, I love what you do.

I recently started blogging as a hobby (I started Dec 2014) mainly because I enjoyed reading other peoples blogs (yours included :P) and I don’t really have many ‘girly’ friends who are into beauty/makeup etc. So I thought joining the blogging community would help me to connect with people with the same interests. I had completely no idea what I was doing (and I still don’t in areas like coding…) but that was the beauty of it. After a while of blogging and still not gaining any followers and not much traffic the only thing I could think was ‘why am I doing this if nobody wants to read it?’ Like you say, it became a game of numbers. Then I took a step back and thought why I am blogging in the first place? And it’s because I enjoy it 🙂 and over time more people have started looking at my blog and listening to what I have to say which is lovely. I hope to continue blogging as it has become a hobby which I really enjoy (and even though it’s not amazing I have worked really hard of it and I’m proud of what I’ve done so far) and that people will come together with the same interests and be supportive of each other 🙂

I have just started blogging, I enjoy make up and beauty etc and also love writing! My photos aren’t great, I’m no photographer and all I have is my phone camera but I’m working on it! God loves a trier right?! I don’t think anyone is reading but I’m enjoying it and that’s all that matters to me. I’ve been reading your blog for years and really enjoy it and I’m glad your starting to “feel it” more again, I’m certainly going to try this app!

Blog like no-ones reading! Then you relax and be more yourself. I started my blog for 2 reasons 1. I love your blog and youtube so much it inspired me to do it. 2. No one in my house enjoys me rambling on the them about all this random stuff so it’s a great outlet. Do what you have to do just know that all your lovely subscribers will be here wishing you the best in whatever direction life takes you. P.s Milo is adorable!

I’ve only recently found your blogs, starting with MissBudgetBeauty. Actually I think it was Make Up Revolution that led me to you! I’m still working my way through your old videos and finding them really interesting. I love the way you write.

Hope your rekindled enjoyment of blogging lasts. You have a lot to say, and teach.

people say this to me and it’s so funny to hear, haha. I don’t want to force anything and not enjoy it anymore so I will continue to do it when I want to and hopefully get back my ‘mojo’

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been feeling down about your blogging. I’ve only been blogging for a year and have only really been taking it seriously for a few months. It’s so hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers, especially ones who appear to be “successful”.

I think it’s lovely when bloggers support each other and try and boost each other. That’s the way it should be.

    Keep up the good work.

I’ve felt the same about blogging before, I think everyone goes through dry spells when it comes to blogging where you feel like you’ve fallen out of love with it, but I’m so glad you’re getting back into it.
Your videos and blog posts are ones I always look forward to 🙂 x
