Trim Your Wick!
Todays product review falls in to the 'You won't believe you lived without this thing you never knew you needed' category. I've heard of people using 'wick trimmers' before and I think I'd even seen one or two but I had chalked them up as entirely unnecessary nonsense purchases until 'the big smoke of 15'. I do trim my candle wicks occasionally because people have mentioned to me that I should as a large flame in a candle is 'dangerous' but it gets trickier to do in an almost empty, large jar and so I hadn't bothered for a while. I was cooking dinner and Lee was complaining about the smoke which I assumed was coming from the kitchen but later learned was coming from the candle.. and entirely filling the room with soot. It was FILTHY! I still have marks on my laptop which was nowhere near the open flame so I dread to think what would happen if I took a wet cloth to my walls!! When we moved house a couple of months ago I learned a little about the sooty residue candles could leave everywhere but nothing to this extent and I didn't change my behaviour so a larger lesson was sent my way. I get it now!
I saw this Yankee wick trimmer in an outlet store and picked one of for both myself and my Mum and I have honestly used mine every day since I got it. I'm not saying you need a branded one but I do believe it's better than scissors alone if you can find a fit for purpose trimmer on eBay or some such. I have the above set up so I chop the wick and dispose of both it and my matches in an upturned Yankee lid hidden behind my current burning fragrances. It might seem like a strange thing to share but the difference it makes is insane, I trim it as close to the wax as possible and it's such a clean burn, never any soot around the glass or smoke from the flame.. I think if someone had explained the merits to me I may have listened sooner to the many people that have been telling me off (usually in YouTube comments) for years! Oh and side note, the candle lasts longer because the flame isn't unnecessarily huge and burning the wax away faster.. if you're a candle lover you DO need this gizmo!
